Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

UPS

It’s that time of year again (I’ve received six calls before 9AM today)  when power outages have the potential to wreak havoc upon computer systems and networks.  While having a surge protector helps protect your electronics from surges, it does nothing to prevent damage from a brownout or sudden unexpected loss of power.

This is where UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) units come in.  Simply put, it is a surge protector with a large internal battery.  They filter the power coming from your wall outlet to ensure whatever is plugged into it is receiving a clean steady stream at 120v.   If there is a power outage lasting longer than what the UPS can provide power for on it’s internal battery, it can safely initiate a normal shutdown of a computer, rather than the machine experiencing a sudden loss of power which has the potential to corrupt the operating system.

I strongly recommend that any type of electronics (not just computers) ranging from your networking equipment to your audio visual equipment (especially that 4k TV)  be protected by UPS. All electronics like clean power, and UPS units can help extend their lifespan.
