Tip # 8 – Identify Fake Updates

fake-flash1

FlashUpdateNotificationOne of these two update notifications is real.  The other is fake, leading the user down a long a dark demon filled road full of malicious software.  Can you correctly pick out the fake?

If you chose the first image as the fake you are correct.  At first glance it may seem legitimate however on closer examination one can identify that there is a spelling error on the last line, ‘requirered’.

Most businesses through their IT department or MSP handle updates, and users should never click on anything that says ‘This program needs to update’.

For this particular update, the only time a user will see a legitimate Adobe Flash Player Update is when first logging into the computer.  It takes up about a 1/4 of the screen, comes up by itself before launching any programs, any web browsers.

If while browsing the web you see this in an ad, or a sudden pop up informing you that this update needs to be applied, it is fake.
